the process

All photos are scanned with a Epson FastFoto FF-680W. All slides are scanned with a Canon CanoScan 9000F Mark ii. The scanned image is then uploaded to a professional software program that will remove scratches and small imperfections, brighten color scans and enhance black and white images.

From there, all images are categorized into folders and organized by the title of the album, slide container title, etc. For example, if your slide container is titled, “Hawaii 1966”, the scanned images will be put into a folder titled, “Hawaii, 1966”. We pride ourselves on taking the utmost care of your original photographs and slides. Original photographs and slides are kept in a temperature controlled environment, free of moisture and away from sunlight while scanning is taking place. Original photographs and slides are transported by Shannon Ferguson and never leave her possession while work is being done. Handling of old photographs and slides can cause imperfections on the originals, such as fingerprints, etc. Archival gloves are worn when handling all original materials. If photographs are delivered in an album, we make every effort to put the album back together exactly as it was delivered. At the time of photograph/slide pickup, Shannon will inspect each album/slide container and if a potential issue presents itself, the client will be made aware and the client will have the final say on photographs/ slides will be removed from their albums/containers. For example, if an album has photographs that are glued directly to the album page, Shannon will discuss with the client and the potential implications of removing prior to any work being completed.

Completed JPEGs (300dpi, perfect for printing, emailing, sharing on social media, etc.) are then copied to a USB drive and hand delivered when the images are returned. For convenience, we also offer complimentary private online gallery hosting for 6 months. Your private gallery can be shared with family via email and all scanned images can be downloaded to any desktop computer for six months.

Shannon Ferguson Photography carries professional photography liability insurance, professional gear insurance, as well as indemnification insurance through Acord (Certificate provided upon request).
